Edward “Wine” Smith

Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. John 11:25-26

Edward Smith was born on October 11, 1946, to the late Helen Smith Jones and the late Eugene Mayho in St. James, Louisiana. He departed this world on June 24, 2026, at the age of 79. He was surrounded by his family and friends at home.

He attended Cedar Grove Elementary School then Magnolia High School. On June 6, 1971, Edward married Gloria Southerland Paul. Together there were five children, April Smith Mitchell (deceased), Carla Paul Steib (deceased), Joseph Paul (deceased), Anita Paul Duronslet (Craig) of Vacherie, LA, and Kermit Alexander Paul (Delisa) of Gonzales, LA.

Edward was a good husband, father, provider and a hardworking man. After working for over 30 years, he became disabled due to a car accident in 1999.

He was known as “Wine” to his friends; a name he got at the age of 13, when he got caught taking a sip out of his uncle’s glass of wine. He also was known as Pawpaw to his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchild and others.

He was an outgoing person, loved sports, fishing, hunting, repairing old cars and tending to other people business. He would tell you what, when, where and how it happened which would never be the right way, but his way.

He would always say he loves me but never say I’m sorry. I asked him why he never say I’m sorry and he said, “you know me and how I feel” but the day he passed away he called me in the room and said, “take care of yourself, I’m sorry, I’m going home”. It brought tears to my eyes. I asked why, he said “I’m tired, I need to rest”. I looked up and said my GOD, my GOD you know what’s best.

Along with his surviving children and wife he leaves to cherish his memories, his sister, Geraldine Octave; brother, George Jones (Loraine); eleven grandchildren, Ariel Mitchell, Leo Mitchell III (Darriyonne), Jolacia Rodrigue (Kentrel), Richard Steib, Jr. (Alisa), Cailah Ezeff (Andre), Craig Duronslet, Jr. (Amber), Anika Nicholas (Ronald), Raynia Paul, Tionah Robinson (Josh), Alex Paul and Elon Paul; eighteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one godchild, Cassandra Jackson; four nieces, Sabrina Joseph (Terrence), Terri Charles (Jeffery), Pastor Kim Bailey (Thomas) and Keion Jones; six nephews, Tyrone Martin (Val), Keith Martin (Earlet), Albert Charles Jr., Keith Charles (Dee), Carlos Charles (Lametra) and Trevor Charles (Felicia); along with a host of great and great-great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
