Bro. Dennis heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest, lay down thy weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast”, and so he came to Jesus just as he was - weary, wounded, and sad. He accepted his offer for salvation at the age of 61 and God then made him glad. He was baptized June 6, 1988 at Mt. Triumph Baptist Church by the late Rev. Roger Davis. On Father’s Day during the early 2000’s Bro. Dennis joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he served as an Usher.
Horace was united in holy matrimony to the late Ethel Mae Marshall on December 23, 1950. To their union, six (6) children were born: Elaine, Eva, Horace Jr., Harold, Evelyn, and Herbert.
During his work life, Horace was employed at Avondale Shipyards Division. After more than 30
years of service, he retired to devote more time to his own business -H. Dennis Vacuum Services, LLC, established in 1975. Horace was a family man with a vision to help the poor and elderly within his community. Using his creative and innovative skills, he designed his very own vacuum truck; and became one of the first Black Business Owners in the small town of Moonshine. After his full retirement, the business was passed down to his son - Herbert Dennis Sr. The business is still in operation today providing commercial and residential services to St. James and surrounding areas.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories four (4) children: Elaine D. Jasmin (Joseph) of St. James, Eva D. Ellis (Terry) of Frederick, MD, Harold Dennis (Geraldine) of Slidell, LA, and Herbert Dennis of Vacherie, LA; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, a devoted granddaughter - Donrielle “Buffy” Dennis, his first born which gave him the title of “PaPony”, a sister - Laura D. Lewis, a brother - Robert Dennis, four (4) sisters-in-law, and two (2) brothers-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ethel Mae Dennis, two (2) children - Evelyn and Horace Dennis Jr., a daughter-in-law Paula Adams Dennis, parents Mary and Edmond Dennis, five (5) siblings: Elma Turner, Melvina Morton, Feeby Joseph Edmond Dennis Jr., and Henry Jenkins; and a Step-Mother Henrietta Dennis.
