Jomekia Denise Nixon-Williams, affectionately known as “Jo,” “Jody,” and “Mekia,” was born on October 13, 1975, in New Orleans. She graced the world with her charismatic spirit until her peaceful departure on May 9, 2026. Her vivacious personality was a beacon of light, illuminating the lives of all who were blessed to know and love her. Jomekia embraced life with an adventurous spirit, unmatched zeal, and a resilient heart that allowed her to face every challenge with grace, courage, and unwavering strength.
Jomekia dedicated many years of her life to caring for others as a caregiver, embodying the same nurturing spirit that made her so deeply cherished by family and friends. She was known for her quick wit, heartfelt conversations, and ability to bring comfort, laughter, and warmth to those around her. She loved getting dolled up and stepping out in style, always carrying herself with beauty, confidence, and elegance. Jomekia also had a passion for cooking, creating meals that brought people together and filled hearts as much as stomachs. Her love for fashion reflected her vibrant personality, and her passion for traveling allowed her to experience the beauty of the world around her. Though she traveled many places, she found her home in LaPlace, where she resided for nine loving years with her devoted spouse, Cindy Marie Williams.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her loving spouse, Cindy Marie Williams; her mother, Claudette Mart-Nixon; and her five daughters, Ontranekia (Gerren) Davis, Thyatira (Leroy) Ray, Cenise (Marcus) Nixon, Michel’le Nixon, and Ja’Nae Hanzy. She was also the proud grandmother of Jace Batiste, Joden Batiste, Bailey Favron, Amir Anderson, Anaira Ray, and Gage Davis.
Jomekia is also survived by her sisters, Demetra Nixon, Georgianna Nixon Bradley, and Shawn Gauthier; her brother, Joey Gauthier; her godson, Jamarion Johnson; and devoted friends Cherita Johnson, Sylvia Matthews, David Pierre, Wendy Griffin, and Lorie Gossrand. She additionally leaves behind a host of devoted nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Ja'Mari Hanzy; her grandson, Hayden Ray; her father, Wesley Nixon IV; her sister, Cowanna Nixon; her brothers, Wesley Nixon V, Carl Gauthier, and Tyrone Gauthier; her maternal grandparents, Ernest and Helen Richard Mart; her paternal grandparents, Wesley Nixon Sr. and Pearl “Sadie” Nixon; and her in-laws, Catherine and Willie Williams.
As a devoted Baptist, Jomekia lived her life grounded in faith, love, and perseverance. Her spirit is beautifully reflected in Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” This scripture perfectly captures the grace, resilience, and joy that defined her life and the legacy she leaves behind.
Jomekia will forever be remembered as a loving spouse, devoted mother, caring daughter, proud grandmother, and loyal friend. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, her love, laughter, and unforgettable spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew her. Her legacy of strength, compassion, and joy will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
