Joseph Norris “ Creole” Laurent Sr. was born to his parents Morris and Emila Lemieux Laurent on January 27, 1932. On Friday, May 5th, 2023 surrounded by family and friends, Creole entered into his home of eternal rest at the age of 91. Joseph was baptized at Our Lady of Peace Church here in Vacherie and continued as a dedicated member and adorer. A great man of few words, but of so much love. He enjoyed his time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved the long visits and conversations with his grandson “Shawnie.” Joseph also had his curbside chocolate chip cookies made fresh and with love from his great-granddaughter Amari, whenever he asked. No matter where you saw him he always had a good joke or a story to tell. The family definitely enjoyed and will miss his white beans and smothered cabbage! Joseph enjoyed tilling his garden, raising chicken, pigs, and fermenting his famous wine. He also enjoyed butchering his pigs with his family and friends. He loved a good booray game “as long as he was winning!” Joseph was a dedicated member of the Adoration Chapel, WISE, Our Lady of Peace Church, Knights of Peter Claver, and The Good Children Benevolent Society. Joseph worked for Avondale Shipyard for 43 years until he retired.\n\nOn October 29th, 1956 Joseph was united in holy matrimony to Dolores Steib. Their union was blessed with 6 children John Randy (Joylin), Joseph Norris Jr (Phyllis), Melissa Smith (Herman), Shawn Matthew, Leon Matthias (deceased), and Taj Jerome (Joann)\n\nHe leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 67 years Dolores, their 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. His in laws and cousins referred to him more as a brother than a brother -in-law. They are Gufielle Keller, Virgina Dumas, Shirley Taylor, Margaret Smith, Micheal Steib , Joseph Steib (Ernie) , Elizabeth Johnson (Cornel), Albert Steib ( Patricia) and Beverly S. Dumas. He was the Godfather to Rodney James and Nathan Dumas Sr, and is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.\n\n\nHe is preceded in death by his parents Morris and Emila Laurent. His son Leon Laurent, 4 sisters OraLee Keller, Shirley Steib ( Joseph), Elizabeth, Geraldine Smith ( Lionel) , Louis Dumas, Marlis Taylor, Charles Smith and Harold Poche. 3 grandchildren Lakisha Lanear Laurent, David Zaccheous Sr, Kylan Micheal and 1 great grand child David Zaccheous Jr. \n\nFamily and friends are invited to attend a public visitation honoring Joseph Norris Laurent Sr., on Friday, May 12, 2023, at Treasures of Life Funeral Services, 315 E Airline Highway, Gramercy, La 70052. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm. \n\nA Mass of Christian burial honoring Joseph Norris Laurent Sr. will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 13281 LA-644, Vacherie, La 70090. Fr.Matthew McCaughey, celebrant. Visitation begins at 9 am. Mass will begin at 11 am. Entombment to follow at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Cemetery.
