February 4, 1936 - September 13, 2026
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Mrs. Lottie Mae Isom Mitchell transitioned peacefully into eternal rest at her home in St. James, Louisiana, at the age of 90 on Sunday, September 13, 2026, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, and love.
Lottie Mae was born into this world as a precious gift from God on February 4, 1936, in Vacherie, Louisiana, to her beloved parents, John Lee, Sr. and Laura James Isom. As the sixth of eight children born to this union, she brought a unique light to a large and loving family. She accepted Christ during her early childhood at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in South Vacherie, Louisiana. Later, she became a faithful parishioner of St. James Catholic Church in St. James, Louisiana. She remained a devoted, lifelong servant of her faith. For many years, she prayed the rosary twice daily and shared her beautiful voice as a dedicated member of the church choir for more than forty years. Through her music, she lifted her voice in praise and worship, enriching the hearts and lives of her congregation.
On October 15, 1955, Lottie Mae Isom was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Peter Mitchell, Sr. Together, they shared 71 years of marriage, building a life grounded in faith, love, family, and devotion to one another. Their union was blessed with five children: three daughters, Lucinda, Cherrie, and Cheryl, and two sons, Bruce and Peter Mitchell, Jr. Lottie Mae was a devoted, loving, and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy and one of her proudest accomplishments. She nurtured her family with unconditional love, instilled in them the importance of faith and family, and created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories. Her love, wisdom, and legacy will forever live on in the hearts of her family and in the generations that follow.
Lottie Mae was an exceptionally talented seamstress whose gift for sewing became both a lifelong passion and a successful entrepreneurial pursuit. At an early age, she learned the art of sewing from her beloved “Mom,” a skill she would carry with her throughout her life and transform into a remarkable legacy. Known for her creativity, precision, and attention to detail, she became well known for creating beautiful bridal gowns and wedding dresses, as well as elaborate costumes for kings and queens participating in Mardi Gras parades. With patience, imagination, and skilled hands, Lottie Mae could transform a simple piece of fabric into something truly extraordinary. Sewing was more than a talent; it was one of the many ways she expressed her creativity, generosity, and love for others. The things she created were often accompanied by something even more precious: a story, a memory, or the knowledge that they were made with love. Lottie Mae’s talents also led her to St. James Community Creations, where she spent many years creating Cabbage Patch dolls. She later worked at the Sewing Factory, where she used her expertise to make children’s clothing for several years. Through her needle and thread, Lottie Mae created much more than clothing and costumes. She created memories, shared her gifts with others, and left behind a legacy of craftsmanship, creativity, and love that will be cherished for generations to come.
She was a woman who knew how to make an entrance. Lottie Mae carried herself with grace, elegance, and a style all her own. Always beautifully dressed and impeccably put together, she was rarely seen without her radiant and unforgettable smile. Beyond her elegance was a joyful spirit that could light up any room. Her infectious laughter, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor brought happiness to everyone around her. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcomed, comfortable, and loved. She was deeply loved and cherished by her family, who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
At 90, Lottie Mae leaves behind far more than memories. She leaves behind lessons in faith, examples of strength, a legacy of love and family, beautiful handiwork, countless stories, and the sound of laughter that those who knew her will never forget. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Peter Mitchell, Sr.; her children, Lucinda (Clyde) Adams, Bruce (Linda), Cherrie (Sean), Dameon, and Peter Mitchell, Jr.; one sister, Josephine Kennedy; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Faye Isom, Cynthia and Lorraine Mitchell; three brothers-in-law, Paul (Joanne), Leo Mitchell, and Hebert Taylor; godchildren, Kendall Isom and Audrey Oubre; bonus loved ones, Roxanne Freeman and Wanda Steib; and dear friends, Laura Lewis, Mary Lee Nelson, and Lydia Small. She leaves her legacy to fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Loved ones awaiting Lottie Mae’s arrival: her daughter, Cheryl; parents, John Lee, Sr. and Laura Isom; six siblings, Alice Steib, Ethel Howard, John Jr., Willie Sr., Cleveland, and Norris Isom; father and mother-in-law, Ozeme Mitchell, Sr. and Alberta Moody; seven brothers-in-law, Paul Steib, Barry Kennedy, Oregan Howard, Sr., and Roy Sr. (godson), Ozeme Jr., James, and John Mitchell; six sisters-in-law, Marie Lewis, Dorothy Sheppard, Marva Lebouf, Albertha Thomas, Barbara Mitchell, and Josephine Isom; and devoted friends, Marlene Oubre and Lucille Landry.
