Mary Alice Avant was born on December 9, 1932, to her loving parents Mary Douglas and Glen White. She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and continued to express her love for the Lord in her daily life. She married her first love, John B. Avant, in Charleston, Mississippi and then relocated with her parents to East Saint Louis, Illinois where she began her new life.\n\nHer new life consisted of raising six children as a single parent and working different jobs to make ends meet. She loved working as a housekeeper at Community Hospital and hosting lots of different events. Her favorite hobbies were having lots of family gatherings, cooking, and playing bingo.\n\nMary was preceded in death by her partner Fred "James" Allen; son James Alexander Avant; mother, Mary Douglas; father, Glen White; sisters, Everlina Spearmen, Pearline White, and Mayappe White; grandson, Sylvester Antonio Jackson Jr.; niece, Rosie Spearmen, and great-grandson, Yuya "Yuchon" Jackson.\n\nShe leaves to cherish her beautiful memories her children, Aretha Jackson Singleton (Charlie) of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Avant Sr. (Faye) of San Diego, CA, Linda Avant Fisher (Eugene) of LaPlace, LA, Jeffrey Avant of Belleville, IL, and Rosemary Avant Davis (Twain) of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Kimetha McKibben (Edgar) of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Avant Jr. of San Diego, CA, Mya Hill (Anthony) of LaPlace, LA, Zantez Avant of El Cajon, CA, Berlin Kerney IV (Denise) of Lakeside, CA, Brandon Avant of San Diego, CA, Dustin Avant of San Diego, CA, Yasheta Avant of Belleville, IL, Alona Avant of Oceanside, CA, Jeffrey Avant Jr. of East Saint Louis, IL, Marlon Avant of San Diego, CA, Florresha Boyd of Belleville, IL, Cassandra Gines of East Saint Louis, IL, Aarkassia Avant of East Saint Louis, IL, Kyeria Godfrey of East Saint Louis, IL, Jawanza Avant of Belleville, IL, and Jabouri Godfrey of East Saint Louis, IL; thirty great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.\n\nA celebration of life honoring Mary Alice Avant will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at The Diamond Center, 22131 Hwy. 20, Vacherie, LA 70090.
