Michael "Boo Man/ Mike" Matthews Obituary (1949 - 2022)

Michael Darrel Matthews was born on November 17, 1949 to Fellman and Louise Matthews in Terrebonne, Louisiana. Michael gave his heart to Christ at an early age. He was baptized at New Rising Sun Baptist Church in Houma, Louisiana by the late Reverand Picou. Michael received his education through the Terrebone Parish School System. Michael worked for Avondale Ship Yard for 20 plus years as a painter. He was proud to show off the ships he painted. After retiring from Avondale, Michael devoted his time to his church, Mount Airy Baptist Church. He was on the Cemetery Board. Michael enjoyed fishing, watching the Saints game, playing spades, cutting his grass, the church grass, and he was the true 'handy man" of the family. Michael departed his earthly frame on September 21, 2022, at the age of 72 at his home in Boutte, Louisiana with his family by his side. Michael married the love his life, Daisy Marie Rapheal on April 3, 2004. Not only did they share their commitment and love towards each other, but they shared their commitment to God. For they knew that together, "They could do all things through Christ that strengthened them." His love and memories will forever remain in the hearts of his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Daisy R. Matthews; children, Dana Matthews, Delvikeo M. Picou, Michael Gaither (Laura), Kelly Matthews, Daniel Rafiel, and Rickey Rafiel (Elizabeth); stepdaughters, Renata Rafiel and Jovan Jenkins (Vincent). Michael also leaves to cherish seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; five sisters, Cora Matthews, Grace Matthews, Vilola M. Christian, Ethel Moore (Eddie), and Diana Collins (Alfred); two brothers, John Matthews and Fellman Jr.; sister-in-law, Susan White (Victor); two brothers-in-law, Joseph Rafiel (Crystal), and David Rapheal (Colett); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, and his Smith Lane Family where he holds close to his heart! He was preceded in death by his parents Fellman Sr. and Louise Matthews; four sisters, Nellie Mae Ruffin, Louise M. Mazink, Jacklyn M. Leblanc, and Jeanette Matthews, and two brothers Hebert and Lawrence Matthews; maternal grandparents, John and Emma Matthews; paternal grandparents, Cora Davis Washington and Alex Washington; and mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Geraldine Rafiel. All neighboring churches, pastors and communities are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life on Friday, September 30, 2022, held at Mount Airy Baptist Church of Boutte, 13635 Old Spanish Trail Boutte, LA at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am. FINAL VIEWING will take place prior to the start of the service. Interment to follow at Mount Airy Baptist Church of Boutte Cemetery.
